Inking people for the Lord

The Tennessean has an article on a Christian oriented tattoo parlor that’s been on Broadway for three years and will be featured this week on American Bible Society Presents, a cable TN show. The shop is called Billy Joe’s Tattoos, at 301 Broadway.

Billy Joe has a website as well, from which the photos below were extracted. They were created (does one say “drawn” for tattoos?) by Emily, one of Billy Joe’s artists.

In one sense, Billy Joe and his crew cry out for parody–why Billy Joe? Was Billy Bob already taken?–but you have to admire the way these artists and their customers act on their faith. According to the Tennessean article, Billy Joe became a Christian while in jail, and upon being released vowed to give up tattooing. “Then one Sunday at church, Henry’s wife, Lynn Henry, felt God put it in her heart for Henry to open a Christian tattoo parlor. ‘This is what he loved doing, and there needed to be a way for him to do something he loved doing,’ she said.”

Definitely worth a visit the next time I’m in Nashville.

This blog is part of a much larger website, also entitled Tennessee Guy, that contains travel and cultural information about Tennessee. Visit it here.
